Germany produces more of our couples than any country except the UK, and the document route here is the slowest of the six on this site. It is worth understanding why before you set a date.

Why it takes six to eight weeks

The Ehefähigkeitszeugnis is issued by your Standesamt after they have checked that both of you are free to marry. Where one partner was born abroad, or holds a second nationality, or has a foreign divorce, the Standesamt frequently refers the file to the Oberlandesgericht for a decision. That referral adds weeks and it is not predictable.

For German-Turkish couples this comes up constantly, and it is the single most common reason a couple has to move a date. Start twelve weeks out, not six.

The alternative most couples take

The Standesamt at home, on a Tuesday morning, with two witnesses. Then the ceremony here with a celebrant, exactly as you imagined it, with no documents at all. Seven in ten of our couples do this and none of them regret it. The reasoning is in legal or symbolic.

If one of you is a Turkish citizen. The registry side is simpler, the marriage is on record in Türkiye without a further step, and it matters for property and residency later. For German-Turkish couples the legal route is often the right answer even though it is slower.

The order to do things in

  1. Book the Standesamt appointment for the Ehefähigkeitszeugnis first. Everything waits on it.
  2. Ask at that appointment whether your file will be referred to the Oberlandesgericht. If the answer is maybe, add six weeks.
  3. Order the international Geburtsurkunde at the same time. The multilingual form saves a translation.
  4. Get the erweiterte Meldebescheinigung last, because it has the shortest validity.
  5. Apostille everything that needs it in one go.
  6. Post the set to us. Sworn translation, notarisation, health appointment and registry booking are ours.

Where German couples marry

Antalya and Belek, overwhelmingly. Direct flights from more than a dozen German cities and resorts that handle a hundred and fifty guests without strain. Bodrum for smaller and more design-led weddings. If a henna night is part of the weekend, Antalya is the region that does it best.
